Welcome

I’m Tanyoung Kim, a Ph.D. Candidate in Digital Media Program at School of Literature, Communication, and Culture, at Georgia Institute of Technology.

My research interest in the domain of digital media studies is the aesthetics and social/political impacts of information visualization. I approach this interest with the methods from design research, for which I explore modern graphic design history and theories. I also have strong technical skills in designing visualization and interactive artifacts. My advisor is Prof. Carl DiSalvo and I am also studying with Prof. John Stasko.

I teach “Principles of Visual Design,” an undergraduate core course at Computational Media major, at School of Literature, Communication, and Culture, Georgia Tech. I give lectures on visual design theories and techniques, create various assignments for practicing design skills, critique students’ works and key readings in visual design and culture.

I had internship at Nokia Research Center Lausanne, where I performed data visualization and analysis of the massive data from their mobile data collection campaign. Prior to pursuing my PhD design, I had worked as a user researcher and an interaction designer at NHN Corporation where I led and participated in various projects spanning user research, interaction design, information architect for web, application and online games. I have background in industrial design; BS and MS from KAIST.

Please start with my research and design highlights.
