Explore Your Culture

This installation/performance explored integrated different cultures through various media. One way to visualize the theme of this performance was kinetic typography which expressed cultural visuality

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Experiencing different cultures is fascinating especially when art works embrace the gap. In this interactive art project, our multicultural team tried to explore the features of each culture – Korea, China, Iran and Romania – through poems, images, sounds and dancing.

To avoid the risk in dealing with different cultures, such as Orientalism and Exoticism, we tried to express the different cultures of 4 countries without any prejudice of superiority or inferiority over each other. Our goal of this project is “Integration”: the integration of different cultures in one work, the integration of different media in one culture. All the different cultures are integrated in one big piece of interactive art work, in which each culture can be expressed sequentially.

INSTALLATION

This interactive artwork is composed of two pieces of white semitransparent cloth, two performers between the two layers who dance and make shadows, two projectors to each layer and the main
interactor in front of layer1.

Text as a poem, image as a painting and the visual elements extracted from traditional paintings, sound as the new arrangement of traditional musical sources and animation as the shadows triggred by performers. For example, in the Korean part. When the user touches one of the flying birds, there generates an image of nature of Korea brought from the traditional folk paintings.

KIINETIC TYPOGRAPHY

As a media of the performance, poem itself can be a visual amusement through the phenomenological aspects of typography. Moreover, if it moves by itself or some factors of texts are changed by an interactor’s motion, the interactor can have more fruitful sensations than keeps the same position.

As I focused on the function of the kinetic typography as non-lingual channel for nonverbal communication in this project, I used kinetic typography to convey the affection which does not have to come with the verbal communication. That is, poem can be an object giving cultural mood through not the lingual semantics but then visual dynamics as kinetic typography.
