Wearable Computer Design

This project was aimed at designing a set of products for emergency medical technicians(EMT) under the theme of “wearable computer”.

Methodology:
On-site Interview, Field Observaction, Persona, Ethnography

CONTEXT RESEARCH

To find real world and real people problems we employed ethnographic methods such as on-site interviews and field observation. We had interviews with a doctor at a emergency room and a emergency rescue person at a fire station. The questionnaires included the current emergency rescue system, the machines and products they use, the interaction with other professions. Based on the analysis of the interviews and the observation of emergency rooms and ambulances, we found problems and design potential. Furthermore, we performed literature review on the cases of French and US specialists.

PERSONA

In the context of Korean emergency treatment system, we created a persona reflecting not only the needs from the previous context research, but also the solution for the future profession – emergency medial technicians (EMT).

After setting the position of our persona, we listed his name, family background, financial status, education, favorites/hates, daily schedule to create a complete persona. Then our approach was scenario-based design to list all the functions the persona needs and the context.

FUNCTION OF WEARABLE COMPUTER

Following a persona scenario, we deducted a flow of the product system use. According to the flow,
we listed several necessary function. We organized them into individual devices attached to specific
parts of body, and integrated as a entire wearable computer system.

FINAL DESIGN PROPOSAL

Treatment device
Treatment devices are composed of Ultra-ray scanner, AED and Patient Tags to identify patients and check the basic body condition.

Communicator
Communicator has a form of head-set which has speakers and a microphone.

Controller
Controller is located on an EMT’s wrist and has control buttons and display. It is connected to a hospital and an EMS center, and shows a patient’ physical condition when the EMT checks his patient with treatment devices.
